The Internet we know today is only one possible interpretation of the original vision of an open, peer-to-peer network. Think of it as a first-generation Internet, built on a fragile global network of vulnerable codes subject to abuse and even collapse. This Internet is failing from too close an encounter with a triple shock: a massive economy built on mining terabytes of personal data, ubiquitous criminal penetration of financial and identity networks (both on our devices and in the cloud), and pervasive state intruders at all levels and at every encrypted hardware and software node.
Today we also see efforts to address the Internet’s vulnerabilities. But these are just the first steps toward a resilient Second Curve Internet. We must learn to build a more reliable private and secure Internet for communications, creation, and commerce.
In this speaker series, we explore the critical elements necessary to reinvent the Internet, gathering leading minds together with IFTF’s deep experience thinking about technology and the ways of communicating, coordinating, and organizing in the changing world around us. The speaker series is part of an ongoing research effort on the insurgent peer-to-peer internet.
In 2016, hacks and data breaches have become the norm. Hacking and cybersecurity are increasingly becoming a concern for politicians, academics, and even everyday people.
This is not going to stop any time soon. In the future, as some farsighted experts are predicting, wars will be fought online. If not exclusively on the internet, the wars and espionage campaigns of tomorrow will have a huge cyber component. VICELAND, with Motherboard’s former editor Ben Makuch, is going to explore the future of hacking, spying and online warfare in a new series called CYBERWAR.
The series will explore Chinese and Russian hackers, the cyber mercenaries who sell spying tools to repressive regimes, and some of the most important and shocking hacks of the past 10 years. Tune in on Tuesday, July 5 at 10:30 p.m ET, and, in the meantime, find out what channel you can watch VICELAND on.
