Brink Vision will release an Edwin Brienen blu-ray collection next month in the USA:
I am in 4 of the 5 films and have been working with this brilliant filmmaker for almost three decades. Not only did we do feature films, but also Ultra Vista! (a monthly cult TV show in Amsterdam), music videos and radio programs.
The first time I set out to film some scenes with Edwin Brienen I was 17 years old. We had a flimsy script, and I was dressed in an even flimsier outfit. The premise was that I was a prostitute being kidnapped. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Since we had no car and no budget, we decided that I was going to hitchhike. The unknown driver was going to drop me off around the corner. What we didn’t anticipate was that the driver thought I was a real prostitute and he hit the gas and took off. I tried to convince him that it was just a movie and that he had to stop the car! This was all happening in bright daylight. He didn’t want to let me go and stared at me with wild dazed eyes. When I threatened to open the door while driving he finally had to let me go. I had to walk back miles on high heels and Edwin (mildly alarmed) came to the conclusion we had to strategize another method to shoot this scene, even though I was totally willing to do another take.
That film (I can’t remember what the title was, probably HitchHike!) was never completed because the cameraman mysteriously disappeared with the footage. We have different theories about what motivated him, but he was an unpaid workforce, and therefore we had no control over him. It also involved a guy named Leo, who had his own sex slave, and I don’t know what happened to him.
We continued to make another 13 films, not less insane. I always love working with Brienen because his challenging projects make me feel so alive, and his insanely brilliant mind creates fascinating characters for me.
Here are the trailers of the five films that will be released:
LENA WANTS TO KNOW ONCE AND FOR ALL:
(I am not in this film, however, I highly recommend this film!)
You can pre-order the Box set on Amazon now, also from Europe:
And here is more information about the director:
Brienen, in German press often called ‘the Dutch Fassbinder’, so far has produced all of his films independently. Along John Waters, he was a main guest at the Lausanne Film Festival in Switzerland, in 2012. Last April, the prestigious Centrum Filmowe Krakow in Poland showed a retrospective of his films.
Edwin has released 15 feature films to date.
Join the Eva Quiz and win fabulous prizes:
1. What did Eva do for the love for acting?
More than she did for the love of a guy.
She ate 20 raw garlic cloves nonstop while crying.
She ran naked through the snow, followed by a man with a pig mask.
She climbed over fences in Berlin into graveyards to do illegal filmshoots
She recited Nietzsche on the train.
She starved herself of food.
All of the above and more.
2. Why did the cameraman disappear with the footage of HitchHike?
He was a member of the Dutch Secret Services and he was shadowing Brienen who had done a fake interview with the terrorist organization Rara in his radio program.
He was disappointed it wasn’t a porn movie.
Leo confiscated him as a sex slave.
He didn’t like the catering that was provided on the set.
All of the above.
If you reply fast with the correct answer you can win a ticket to one of these screenings early next year.
